(NR 503) Concept Map Chamberlain University

  1. The Concept Map must visually connect all of the specified objectives  (Program Outcomes, MSN Essentials, and NONPF Competencies) to course work (such as specific discussion board topics, written assignments, exams, lessons, and reading content).
  2. All items should be labeled, for instance, label the objectives and label the course work you select with name of the assignment/reading/discussion board topic and which week it was introduced.
  3. Use Microsoft Word or a PowerPoint to create a Concept Map. You can use the features found on the “Insert” tab of a Word doc (in the horizontal ribbon on the top of a Word doc page). For instance, if you click on “insert” you will see shapes and SmartArt. You can use a PowerPoint slide with shapes and lines to create a concept/mind map. This is not a PowerPoint presentation , but a PowerPoint slide can be used to “draw” the Map.

Outcomes/Competencies to be connected with course learning:

MSN Program Outcome #2:

Create a caring environment for achieving quality health outcomes (Care-Focused).

Concept Map Assignment

Welcome to this overview of the Concept Map Assignment.

The purpose of this assignment is stated on the first slide.  Its aim is to create a visual map that connects the work of the course to all of the objectives, which are provided for you in an upcoming slide.

You will see the Course Learning Outcomes next as related to this assignment.

So next, let’s move on to the assignment:  What is a Concept Map?

A concept map is a picture using shapes, colors, arrows, etc. to demonstrate a relationship between “things”.  These “things” for NR503 are:  1. Competencies and Outcomes and 2.  Assignments.

Next…the assignment requirement specifics:

You may read in the course information about using a free online concept map program.  This is not required.  You will also see a link for a video about making a concept map.  You may also choose to use youtube where there are quite a few videos about this topic.

You can make a Concept Map using the “Insert” tab from the top of the Word Doc page quite easily.  You will see the word “Shapes” and if you click on this you are able to put them on the page, make them different colors, and to add words into them as well.  For instance, if you click on “rectangle” you will then see the cross shape appear with your mouse and if you drag it to the page, you can click it, and create a shape.

As you will see on the “Requirements” slide, all course outcomes should be connected to a variety of course assignments.  And the following slides show you the Outcomes / Competencies and Assignments which may be used for the Concept Map.

The next two slides have examples of what a Concept Map looks like. The first is a concept map that relates the following:  Snow, Ice, Falls, Accidents, Wages, and Quality of Life.

The next slide shows the relationships between fruits and colors.

Concept Maps are really quite fun and allow you to be creative and think outside the box!
